VMware Hot Topics – February

It’s been a busy month here at Altaro with our v7 release, so this edition of our VMware Hot Topics series comes a bit later in the month than usual. With that in mind, we’ve still put together our usual list of interesting links, cool howtos, and hot news stories from the VMware world from the over the last month below!

For those who aren’t regular readers of this segment, this is something I put together on a monthly basis, with the idea that someone can read though the provided links, videos, and audio bites, and have a good general idea of what’s happening in the industry with VMware over the past month.

Let’s get Started!

VMware ESXi 6.0 Update 3 Release Notes

Author: VMware KnowledgeBase

vSphere 6.0 U3 was released back on the 24th of February with a number of new things for those installations that haven’t been updated to 6.5 yet. The ESXi host client has been updated to version 1.14.0, support for TLS is included and enabled by default and multiple fixes for VSAN performance issues have been released as well. If you aren’t a VSAN customer the urgency to move to this release may not be a huge priority, but if you are running VSAN in your environment, you’ll want to look at this ASAP.

vSAN Performance Enhancements Delivered with vSphere 6.0 Update 3

Author: VMware KnowledgeBase

While the above link is more of a generalist release notes type of document, this page from the VMware knowledge base includes the information that is specific to vSAN’s performance enhancements. These performance enhancements include things like Log changes and Checksum improvements. Additionally some enhancements for delete operations have been put in place as well to improve performance for certain disk operations.

vSphere Encrypted vMotion Architecture, Performance, and Best Practices

Author: Ryan Birk

Ryan does some writing for us on occasion and he posted something on his personal blog back in February that caught my eye. With virtual machines today just being a collection of (ultimately) mobile files, security of the files, should they be moved offsite, or sniffed mid transit, has increasingly become a major concern. Ryan talks very briefly about this subject, and then links to the official ebook from VMware on this topic as well. It’s worth a read if you’d like to get a little more information about how this new feature works and affects things like manageability and performance.

Virtually Speaking Podcast – vSAN Customer Use Cases

Author: Virtually Speaking Podcast

When it comes to immerging technologies such as vSAN, use case always comes into question. Is the product a fit in this situation? How about this one? In this episode of the Virtually Speaking Podcast, Chief Technologist from VMware Duncan Epping talks about this very topic.

NSX 6.3 Upgrade

Author: Kyle Jenner

Since it’s release, VMware NSX has somewhat taken the industry by storm. It is one product that VMware is putting a lot of development effort behind NSX and as such we’ve seen a pretty steady cadence of releases. This post by Kyle Jenner, links the reader to the official release notes for NSX 6.3 and then walks them through actually conducting the upgrade with pictures and all. If you’re needing to upgrade NSX at some point in the near future, this is a good resource to have In the bookmarks.

vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 Tips and Tricks

Author: Florian Grehl

The vCenter Server Appliance or VCSA is a widely useful tool to have in any VMware environment, and learning how to get the most out of the appliance is highly useful to all VMware administrators. Florian has posted a very useful howto on his blog on doing a number of different things with the VCSA. This includes things like file transfers via SCP/SFTP, modifying shell session timeouts, using VIMTop and more. There should be a little something for every reader in this article.
