For those who are new to VM backup – It’s easy and flexible to understand and install Altaro Hyper-V Backup.
Just received the email about the procedure..
not backwards compatible or an ‘normal’ upgrade procedure is actually very bad (like, everything keeps working, but there needs to be upgrade/conversion work to let new futures work…
positive side, the improvement seems huge, so we scheduled some upgrades for this evening.

We’ve received a few complaints from customers like yourself about the upgrade procedure from earlier versions to v4. They (and you) are right to complain – the fact that we didn’t include backward compatibility means all backups need to be set up from scratch and although backups taken by v3.5 can be restored using a workaround, this is far from an ideal situation and I feel we owe you an explanation.
While developing v4 we realized that in order to really push forward the product and at the same time keep it light, fast and easy to use, we would need to build up certain components from scratch. Sacrifices had to be made and I made the decision to take this route.
I sincerely apologize for any headaches we may have caused you by doing so, however, I’m confident that the new features offered are well worth the hassle and future versions will not require such a complicated upgrade procedure.
In the event that you encounter difficulties along the way, we’re obviously here to help ease some of the pain so reach out when you need us, as always.
